Biography

Roselina Hung received an MA Fine Art in Painting from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, and a BFA from the University of British Columbia. She also spent a year at L’Ecole National Superieure des Beaux-Arts, in Paris, France. Her work has exhibited internationally and can be found in private collections around the world. Born in 1980, Vancouver, Canada; she currently lives and works in Vancouver.

Statement

My practice is predominately portraiture that examines the artifice in re-presentations of memories. The paintings reflect on perceptions of singular and collective memories, including histories, in relation to their representation in photography and film. My works are based on images taken from photographs; taken by others or myself, personal or found, posed or snapshot. I am interested in examining society"s visualization and understanding of memories and histories through images, including ideas of nostalgia, and the creation of a hyper-reality, wherein accepting the simulation as authentic, the belief in the fake supersedes the real in importance. I want to engage the viewer"s personal experiences and memories and question their understanding of their own, others", and shared concepts of nostalgia. Constructed images of hypothetical pasts, which feel vaguely familiar, are created by borrowing from personal and collective memories, pop culture, and the mass media. The works pass as re-presentations of people and events, questioning the validity of memory, history, and the freedom taken by myself and others in their (re)collection and (re)creation.
